Chapter 1: Learning The Facts

-Taylorsville, UT: 2005-

"So, you and Phil are really engaged?" Monique squealed. "How? When?"

"Right after he got back. We started dating and he finally asked me to marry him last night." Sarah giggled.

"Have you set a date yet?" she asked.

"Not yet." Sarah shook her head. "His parents are throwing us an engagement party on Friday Night."

"Have you told Miguel yet?" Monique questioned. I know there's no love loss between those two."

"He didn't threaten to beat him to a pulp this time." Sarah smiled at the memory. "He's coming too, actually. Alone, in fact."

"How's the family coping?" Monique replied.

"They're ecstatic." Sarah told her.

"I'm just happy you got out of Cinemark when you did." Monique sighed. "Have you decided on colors or a setting yet?"

"I thought lavender and a springtime yellow." Sarah told her.

"Are you still planning on building 'Paradise'?" Monique inquired.

"No." Sarah sighed. "That dream was lost ages ago."

"When Miguel admitted he had feelings for you." Monique remembered. "You're not surprised, are you? Because everyone knew about the sparks between you two."

"It wasn't the right time then and it's not the right time now." Sarah brushed the subject off. "I'm marrying the guy I've loved since I was 11, okay? Miguel's not Phil. He'll find love with someone, it's just not me. Now can't you at least sound happy for me?" "I am happy for you. "Monique promised her. "I'm just saying it's your call."

The doorbell rang just before Monique could ask her something else. Sarah opened it to find a flower deliverer.

"Can you believe it?" White roses. See how perfect Phil is for me?" Sarah squealed.

"Yeah, perfect." Monique read the card. "So perfect that these flowers are from Miguel, not Phil."

"I should've known." Sarah crumpled the card up and threw it away. She wasn't going to let Miguel get to her. So why couldn't she get him out of her head?
