Wound Up

By: spoiledsquish

Disclaimer: I said to Joss, “So, I want you to kill off Wesley, Fred, and break B/A up.” And he just shrugged and walked away…Gee, did I vague that up for ya? Of course they aren’t mine!

Author’s Note: The song is called “The Safest Place”, by LeAnn Rimes, and is off her “Twisted Angel” album. For it being country music, a genre a hate with a passion, I really enjoyed it. Witness me recommending the album.

Distribution: My site, Seductive Web, PPA, Enchanting Place, Fanfiction.net, WTTS, PFYL, TEF, Sempiternal Beloved...If you host my fics regularly, feel free. If you don’t, just ask and most likely you shall receive.

Summary: Buffy grieves for her lover’s death…But is there more to the story than meets the eye? Written for Buffy Survivor Week 3 challenge. The fic is 615 words, if ya don’t count the lyrics. With the lyrics, it’s 856 words, so it’s all kept within the said perimeter.

Pairings: B/A

Rating: PG-13, I suppose.

Spoilers: None. Character Death…sort of.

Dedication: For Liz, who even though I miss her terribly, inspires me in unknown ways. Hope you come back soon, sweetie! I need my Roswellian partner in crime!

//Thank God that you were by my side//

She inhaled his musky scent before her head even reached the pillow. Any arguments she’d had previous to this moment were long forgotten, as her mind unconsciously sunk into slumbering oblivion.

//Daytime I'm fine
Everything is back normal
Last night I thought that I would die//

She could hardly remember a time when his arms hadn’t comforted her, when she sobbed endlessly onto his leather jacket, letting the tears stain the cool material. Her mind often wandered, always considering the possibility that maybe he thought her to be nothing more than a crybaby who clung to him in times of need.

//I had nightmares, I was so scared
Thank god that you were by my side
To hold me when I cried//

But those times when she was at her worst, his soothing arms would cling around her petite form, whispering words of promise into her ears. Her delicate fingers would trace the outline of his tattoo from memory, and she would hear soft growls of satisfaction erupt from him.

//I wanna be strong
But I don’t wanna be alone tonight
I wanna believe that I can save the world
And make it right, but I'm only human
And you've got a hero's face
Right here in your arms is safest place
The safest place//

She broke down after he’d died. She couldn’t bring herself to say the correct terminology of his death. She hated the word, after having those closest to her become of victim of the same society.

//It feels so real
You showed I could trust you
With emotions I had locked away
It was your touch, your words
They heal the deepest part of me
That only you can see//

When Alexander had been born, she stared blankly at him, not comprehending how this magnificent creature was a part of her and her lover. She was impelled to feel hatred against the innocent form, for being a part of her soul mate, who she couldn’t be with now.

//I wanna be strong
But I don't wanna be alone tonight
I wanna believe that I can save the world
And make it right, but I'm only human
And you've got a hero's face
Right here in your arms is safest place//

But when she saw his face, that look of longing shining brightly on that little head of his, she knew that all justifications had been thrown out the window. She would finally grieve for her lost love, instead of just pretending he was going to return in the flesh one day.

//As long as I'm with you
As long as I can feel you
That's all I need to keep me going
On and on and on and on....//

The sound of Alexander crying woke Buffy out of her slumber. She yawned, checking the clock to see what time it was.

3:37 am.

Alexander usually slept directly through until morning, but Buffy stumbled into the nursery to see what was distracting her son. Her eyes bulged out of their sockets when she arrived at her destination.

//I wanna believe that I can save the world
And make it right, but I'm only human
And you've got a hero's face
Right here in your arms is safest place
The safest place//

Her lover, her Angel was standing next to the crib, rocking him back and forth to sleep. Buffy didn’t say a word, and she was too in shock to notice if Angel had felt her presence when she’d entered the room moments ago.

Buffy pondered in those moments from when he rocked Alexander to the time he whispered her name if she’d just pondered up the whole scene to keep her from sobbing for her love.

She was too numb to feel anything, even as he held onto her, rubbing the small of her back to alert her out of whatever funk she was in. He picked her up off of the ground, and carried her bridegroom style into their room, depositing her gently on the bed.

He cupped her cheek, watching her snuggle deeper into his embrace. He defied a God, a whole race to come back to her, and he was never letting go again. He knew that when morning came, no doubt Buffy or Dawn herself would be on the telephone, calling everyone they’d ever come into contact with to alert people of the miraculous news.

//Right here in your arms is safest place//

But for now, he was just content to lay here with her in his arms. He knew that he should wake her so that they could talk about his return, but he didn’t want to scare her, let alone hear her voice cry out in sorrow, telling him of all the pain she endured while he was gone.

//The safest place
The safest place//

Angel rose out of his brooding session. His mouth twitched into a grin as he realized that he had what he always had longed for in all his 250+ years.

A family.

And for the first time in many centuries, Angel knew he was finally home.
